HealthMap is frequently used by publich health agencies to organise and visualize the current information about global disease outbreaks based on time, geography as well as infectious disease agent. Users include the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and other public health agencies.

In April 2009, outbreak of H1N1 pandemic began in Mexico, and the virus continued to spread globally. Interactive Swine Flu maps have been developed to show the progression of the spread of H1N1 throughout the world during the early stages of the pandemic.

Create a thematic map showing the disease outbreak

When the heat map function is enabled in the mapping tool, users can choose the colors for start of gradient, end of gradient and highlight. After that, import the data of the number of confirmed cases for each country either from an excel file or edit directly via the software. Once the heat map is generated, you can see different levels of color gradient in different regions. For instance, Mexico with the most number of confirmed cases is displayed in dark red ;countries with 0 confirmed case are presented in white color while those in between are shown with colors that lie in between the two extreme colors.

Add map legend and points to show confirmed supected, death and confirmed cases of the disease outbreak

Different colored markers can be used to present different cases. For instance, the map uses black markers to indicate confirmed cases and blue marker to indicate suspected cases each country has encountered so far. Cross markers on top of the markers indicate that it is a death case. Show details of epidemic outbreak on mouseover/mouseclick

It is possible to click on the placemarks or regions to get more detailed information about the epidemic outbreak, including the number of confirmed cases and actions taken in that area. Images can also be shown along with the text on mouseover.

Flash interactive epidemic map with pan and zoom feature

Viewers can click the +/- icon in the control bar, or drag the mouse slider upward/downward to zoom in/out the flash epidemic map. They can also click the arrows on the control bar in the upper left corner of the Flash map to navigate and pan the map left, right, up and down.
