Class reunion interactive map

I am looking for map software that I can load on my computer and then use to make a variety of maps for different projects. Also, I have been tasked with building an interactive map for my class reunion. The completed map will have pop-ups with information where a member of the class has lived or visited. When completed I want to import the completed maps into a power point or other program that can be shared with classmates at the actual reunion.
