Set up Category Legends

Once you have create categories and assign overlays into them, you can create a legend item called Category Legends to control how the overlays in each category to be displayed on the map.

You may follow the setup procedure in this video.

Enable category legend

  1. Go to the Category Legend Setting button on the horizontal toolbar and click on it, or choose Edit Category Legend Settings from the drop down menu of that button.
  2. If you do not have any categories created up to this point, you will be asked to create some categories first. Please follow our Create Categories to Assign Overlays guide for categories creation.
  3. In the Category Legend dialog box, click on Turn On under the Category Legend section.

Category legend type

There are 2 types of category legends you can set for your needs.

  • Multiple Selection: Multiple selection means that more than one categories can be shown at the same time if they are toggled on in the legend. Each category item comes with a checkbox, so checking this box will display all the overlays that are assigned to this category on the map.
  • Single Selection: Single selection means that only overlays of one category can be shown at one time. Each category item becomes a hyperlink, and selecting one category will hide the overlays of other categories on the map.

Category legend and item settings

You can compile your list of your categories in your desired order in this section.

  1. Use the Add Legend Item button to add a new item into the legend. If you have already created some categories before, you will be prompted to add them into the legend automatically. Click Yes to add them automatically, or No to add a normal item for further changes in the next steps.
  2. You can choose the type of the item it represents and associate it with any categories you have created under Category Legend Item Settings section.
    • Item Type: Define the type of the selected item in the legend. Choose Category Item if the legend item is associated with a category. Choose Title if the legend item is a text description only. Title items are displayed in bold text in the legend.
    • Description: The name that is displayed in the legend. If it is a category item created by adding the categories automatically, the description will share the same name of the category. You can change it to your desired designation.
    • Category ID (Category Item Only): Associate the legend item with the category here, and this setting is disabled for Title items. Choose the name of the category from the drop down menu. You can also choose No Category from the list to represent any objects not added to your defined categories.
    • Category Status (Category Item and Multiple Selection Only): To set whether the legend item is selected or not when the map loads. If the legend item is selected, then the overlays in the category are shown. This setting is not applicable for Title items, nor the type of legend is in Single Selection mode.
  3. You can change the order of the legend items by using the arrow buttons to the right hand side of the list.
  4. Hit the Delete Legend Item to delete any existing legend items from the list.

Category layout settings

You can change the appearance of Category Legend in this section with these ways.

  • If you are now in the Category Legend dialog box, click the Background Color and Style button under Category Layout Setting section.
  • You can also open the dialog directly by using the drop down menu of the Category Legend Setting button on the horizontal toolbar, then choose Edit Background Color and Style item from the list.

Disable category legends

  1. Go to the Category Legend Setting button on the horizontal toolbar and click on it, or choose Edit Category Legend Settings from the drop down menu of that button.
  2. In the Category Legend dialog box, click on Turn Off under the Category Legend section.
